History – we
did not get where we are
today without… |
| Bridges was founded in September
2003 by Shropshire based international development charity
Harvest Help (now Self Help Africa) in response to a need
and demand for education around global issues in Shropshire.
Those of you who remember us from our beginnings will remember
our Fairtrade Shop and resource centre adjacent to the bus
station in Wellington, Telford. Bridges became one of a network
of fifty Development Education Centres across the UK, and
a member of the Development Education Association. In its
early days the centre focused on bringing the global dimension
to the curriculum in schools and promoting an understanding
of Fairtrade in the County of Shropshire. |
| The commitment of Harvest
Help enabled Bridges’ work to continue to expand. Bridges
became an independent charity and company limited by guarantee
in July 2005. It was instrumental in Shropshire’s bid
to become a Fairtrade County – a status which was achieved
in March 2007 – and the production of a Fairtrade Guide
to the county. |
| Bridges’ work has
continued to grow, thrive and diversify. Thanks to the skills
of our staff and volunteers and the support of our funders
we now offer a range of services and projects to educational
organisations, community groups and interested individuals
covering global issues, diversity and what we can all do
to build a better world. Our work continues to focus on the
county of Shropshire but our reach is now broader. In May
2007 Bridges took on the role of supporting schools in the
West Midlands wishing to gain Fairtrade Status. Furthermore,
through work with our partner organisations, our work and
influence is beginning to take on a national and even global
dimension. |
