Primary School Projects

Global Food Chain
Four schools in Shropshire will be taking part in a year long Global Food Chain project inspired by the Year of Food and Farming this year.

Sherrifhales, Stoke on Tern, Lady Grove and Hodnet are the first schools to pilot this project and have been working closely with Bridges to produce a programme of activities looking at food issues in the local and global community.

The project will involve students completing food diaries which will be posted on a website looking at what the students eat, where they come from and how they feel about a food issue, such as fair trade. Participant schools will also be encouraged to take action on a food issue identified by the students.

Bridges is currently developing links with China and Africa so that their experiences and diets can be compared with children from different backgrounds and experiences.

We hope that at some point more schools in Shropshire will join the Global Food Chain Project and that we will have an ongoing dialogue between pupils at home and abroad. If there are any schools who would like to get involved, please get in touch with Mana at Bridges.

Global Citizenship for Shropshire Schools - A project to work intensively with three primary schools each year to help them bring the global dimension to the whole curriculum. Supported by Oxfam.

Delegates from eight Shropshire schools at the 2007 Shropshire Schools G8 Summit

G8 Challenge- A project to promote discussion and action on topical global issues. 8 schools continue to be involved this year. Following on from Bridges 2nd mini- summit in June, schools councils are busy working to raise awareness on issues such as poverty and disease and how to reduce one’s carbon footprint. As well as raising money for mosquito nets, schools have planned a wide range of activities for the year, including organising an eco-friendly day out.

Global Challenge Conference 2008 - As part of the G8 Challenge we are holding a conference on Friday 27th June at Shire Hall to celebrate what schools councils have achieved during the year and encourage further action through workshops on global issues.
If you would like members of your schools council to attend, please contact Bridges.

Secondary School Projects

Tackling Controversial Issues – Using Experiential Education to Tackle Controversial Global Citizenship Issues in Secondary Schools This project aims to find out the extent to which experiential education methodologies for tackling controversial issues add to the skills, values and attitudes associated with global citizenship. Experiential education draws on, or simulates, real life and emphasise pupil's experiences rather than knowledge. We are working with Telford Learning Innovation Centre and secondary school citizenship departments in Telford and Wrekin. The project will comprise a series of interviews, day sessions at the Learning Innovation Centre and individual classroom and training sessions in schools. A one year project starting in January 2007 and funded by Oxfam's 'Innovative Projects' Fund.

Carbon Trading – As part of the development of a pan-European carbon trading website, we are working with three Shropshire secondary schools. Pupils across Europe will trade virtual carbon in a fast-moving auction that helps pupils understand about the possible solutions to climate change.

Community Projects

Views from Shropshire-The Views from Shropshire project is now featured on the BBC Radio Shropshire and can be accessed by clicking here.

Individuals will be able to listen to the life histories from Black and Minority Ethnic groups in the county by clicking on the clips on the site.

Project Officer Mana Kaur explains
“I am very pleased with the quality of the interviews and the range of stories and experiences that have been documented. I very much look forward to sharing them with the wider community and I hope it will encourage people to recognise and value Shropshire’s multi cultural heritage”.
The Heritage Lottery Funded project will be developed into a short community film, exhibition, book and educational resource. To find out more email Manjit@shropshirebridges.org.uk or contact Mana at Bridges.

Global Village, Shropshire - Bridges will work with three village communities in Shropshire to enabling them to celebrate or mark global events such as Fairtrade Fortnight or World Aids Day.
