Our staff have a background in teaching across all Key Stages and will be happy to discuss your needs. KS2 Workshops currently offered: Human Rights An exploration of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, from a global perspective. Children will be asked to justify what they consider to be a need or 'right'. They will look at how children enjoy rights, such as the right to play, around the world. Trade and Fairtrade An accessible look at the issues surrounding trade and fairtrade. Children will play a whole-class fast moving simulation game to find out who wins and who loses when it comes to world trade. They will look at what life for a farmer in a developing country might be like, and how initiatives such as fairtrade can make a difference to their lives. Refugees and Asylum Seekers Investigating the facts and feelings of refugees and asylum seekers in the UK, including the exploring and exploding the myths. Through stories, poems and role-play, pupils learn why people become refugees and what life can be like for a refugee child. Global - Local Links Even at breakfast we rely on people in many parts of the world. In this workshop children will explore the ways their lives are connected places around the globe- through what they wear, watch, eat and even think. Examples from around Shropshire (and the classroom!) will be used. An African Experience A workshop looking at life for children in rural Africa, using artefacts, photographs and information from Zambia and other African countries. Children will take part in a series of activities exploring what it might be like to go to school, eat, sleep and work in an African village. Recycling around the World How and why people recycle objects around the world, with particular reference to Africa. Includes looking at artefacts and practical work on making useful things out of what might be considered rubbish. Continuing Professional Development We offer specialist training to teachers in school and in external training sessions. We are available to run sessions within school time, or as a twilight session or PD day. We can tailor sessions to your needs, however we suggest you focus on one or more of the following:
Bridges has recently extended its services to work with colleges and is now offering a range of workshops as part of the college enrichment programmes. The workshops are delivered by a experienced youth and community worker and aim to help develop young people’s awareness and understanding of complex world issues such as racism, diversity, poverty, the environment and fair trade. The workshops have been piloted at Shrewsbury College and have been well received by tutors and students. Paula Cleaver, the Public Services tutor commented “the racism workshop was excellent and I was really surprised by the maturity demonstrated in the group. I saw a side to the group that I had not seen before”.To find out more about the workshops or the possibility of developing a youth project with you organisation, please speak to Mana Kaur. Charges We charge for workshops and training sessions on a ‘cost recovery’ basis’. Please click here for our 07/08 Charging Policy.
