"A Sense of Belonging", exploring identity and community at the Sutherland School, Trench
Number of participants: 25
Ethnic backgrounds: White British
Age range: 14-15
Year 10 students at the Sutherland School in Telford, produced a banner to represent their thoughts and feelings about community.
The workshop involved young people producing a mind map of words that represent who they are, where they live and the best and worst aspects of their local community. The students developed their mind map into images, which were then pasted onto the banner.
The workshop encouraged students to look beyond their immediate surroundings and develop an awareness of themselves, and the part they play within their school and local community. Pupils also considered how communities can give us a sense of belonging even though they can be exclusive to others.
