| Project Information |
| Views from Shropshire is a two year Heritage
Lottery funded project. It has collected sixty-eight oral history
accounts, through one-to-one interviews and group workshops with
ethnic minority groups. The project aims to raise awareness of
Shropshire’s multi-cultural heritage and to challenge the popular
misconception of Shropshire as an ‘all white county’. |
| The project has enabled individuals from
diverse backgrounds and experiences to share their life stories
and to celebrate their contribution to Shropshire life, through
their work and voluntary contributions. |
This
project has:
- Preserved thirty oral histories at Shropshire Archives.
- Developed a book based on thirty oral histories.
- Developed a film and accompanying workbook based on
five reminiscence workshops.
- Developed fourteen hours of teaching materials for
Key Stage 2 and
3, to help explore issues of 'difference', 'diversity'
and 'community cohesion'.
- Delivered fourteen arts workshops based on the Views
from Shropshire oral histories, with schools, youth and
community groups.
- Delivered a hugely successful exhibition which has
toured over twelve venues in Shropshire. This continues
to promote awareness of diverse communities in Shropshire.
- Developed spin-off projects in conjunction with Age
Concern and the Shrewsbury College of Arts and Technology
including:
- Bridges ‘Celebrating Diversity Event’ at the Shrewsbury
College of Arts and Technology.
- Bridges anti-racism peer mentoring project at the
Shrewsbury College of Arts and Technology.
- An intergenerational project facilitated by Age
Concern, Telford.
- Developed ongoing diversity workshops, which will continue
to disseminate this project.
